This joyful, story-driven commission was created for Chuck as a deeply personal reflection of family, connection, and place. Each weathered signpost points to a meaningful location—homes of children and grandchildren—anchoring the piece in love, distance, and togetherness all at once. From Lake Oconee, where memories are made, to cities scattered across the map, every destination carries a story.

At the heart of the composition is one of Janet Swahn’s signature “HaPpY” characters—playful, expressive, and full of life—serving as both observer and emotional guide through the piece. The soft, layered background and textured sign elements give a sense of time, travel, and lived experience.

A special detail adds a layer of charm and discovery: Chuck plans to hang this piece in Damariscotta, Maine—known as the oyster capital of the state. At the top, a playful oyster marked “Damariscotta” gives a nod to its destination. This coastal touch subtly influences the palette and whimsy of the character, tying the artwork not just to family, but to its final home.
